Leading Tax Lawyer Daniel P. Meehan Rejoins Chicago Office of Kirkland & Ellis

Kirkland & Ellis LLP announced today that Daniel P. Meehan has returned to the Firm's Chicago office as a partner in the Tax Practice Group. A former tax associate in Kirkland's Chicago office, Mr. Meehan rejoins the Firm from the New York office of Cooley LLP, where he was the firmwide chair of Cooley's tax practice group. Mr. Meehan's practice focuses on the tax aspects of private fund formation, private equity transactions and M&A.

"Dan adds to our senior tax bench in private equity fund and venture capital fund matters, and his transactional tax practice is an excellent fit for our industry-leading buyout, growth equity and M&A practices," said Jeffrey C. Hammes, Chairman of Kirkland's Global Management Executive Committee. "We are delighted that Dan has returned to Kirkland."

Mr. Meehan, 45, has 20 years of experience assisting private equity and venture capital fund sponsors with the tax aspects of fund formation, secondary transactions and general partner matters. He also has deep experience with the tax aspects of private equity and growth equity transactions, add-on acquisitions, general M&A and joint ventures.

Mr. Meehan has written for the Venture Capital Review, the Journal of Partnership Taxation and The Tax Lawyer, and has contributed to Mergers, Acquisitions & Buyouts (by Kirkland partners Jack Levin and Donald Rocap) as well as numerous other tax-related publications.

Before beginning in private practice, Mr. Meehan served as a law clerk for the Honorable Robert P. Ruwe of the U.S. Tax Court in Washington, D.C. He received a L.L.M. in taxation (with highest honors) and a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center, where he served as editor-in-chief of The Tax Lawyer, the most widely circulated tax law journal in the country. He holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Colorado.

"It was a difficult decision to leave Cooley, but I am excited to rejoin Kirkland and its outstanding tax group," Mr. Meehan said. "Kirkland's private fund and transactional practices are at the forefront of the industry, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work again with colleagues in those groups."
