America's Leading Lawyers for Business 2007: Appellate Law

Chambers & Partners has compiled their independent and objective list of America's Leading Lawyers for Business based on comments gathered from thousands of interviews with clients and lawyers from Maine to Hawaii. This guide -- which is designed to reflect market opinion -- contains a view of the firms and attorneys who are considered leaders in their field.

In Chambers' 2007 review of national legal talent in the area of "Appellate Law," our Firm and our lawyers are listed among the best in the country.

Chambers' comments:

National Ranking: 4

The Firm: This term has historically been recognized for being headed by the aptly named Kenneth Starr. The former Solicitor General may be devoting more time to academia these days but his reputation lives on. Chris Landau has taken on the mantle of leading the national appellate group and is felt to be doing a fine job. Interviewees commented on the “excellent young blood” he can draw upon and the profusion of work the practice has brought in. The team has handled a diverse range of appeals arising in federal and state courts and has built up a substantial Supreme Court practice. Examples of work undertaken include the representation of the petitioner in Buckeye Check Cashing v Cardegna, a matter involving the enforceability of an arbitration clause contained in a contract alleged to be illegal. Sources highlight this team’s popularity as partly stemming from its “talent for presenting complex questions of law and fact in simple and straightforward terms.”

Clients/Work Highlights: The group represented the motion picture studio and recording company petitioners in MGM v Grokster, a successful copyright challenge in the Supreme Court.
