Kirkland & Ellis International LLP Involved in Relief Project Marking the Anniversary of the Pakistan Earthquake

Kirkland & Ellis has been continuing its endeavours to aid the people of Northern Pakistan following the devastating earthquake that rocked the region last year. As the anniversary of the natural disaster approaches on 8 October, the Firm is continuing its involvement in pro bono and fundraising efforts to bring aid to those still in need.

A year ago, Kirkland & Ellis’ Munich associate Martin Ströhmann had been in the region when the massive earthquake struck Northern Pakistan, measuring 7.6 on the Richter scale. “What I probably will never forget for the rest of my life is this awful rumbling of the earth and the devastation it caused," Martin said. Only a few days after the earthquake he had the opportunity, to accompany a Pakistani television camera crew to the epicentre and get a first hand impression of the situation.

This September Martin returned to Pakistan with a cheque for €7,500 from Round Table in his hand and a determination to help. Martin is co-founder of the Round Table service project RTH2O, a project designed to assist in rebuilding the water supplies for about thirty villages in the region which were almost totally destroyed. “It is shocking to see that almost a year after the earthquake hit Northern Pakistan, there is still so much desolation. But the foundation has been laid now, the first well can be built with this money, which is a start."
