Overview

Matthew Smith is a partner in the Investment Funds Practice Group of Kirkland & Ellis LLP. Matt’s practice focuses on advising investment managers on all aspects of their business, including forming private investment funds, complex business transactions, fund regulatory and compliance matters and firm ownership and operational issues. He also advises secondary funds, institutional investors and sponsors in connection with complex secondary transactions, including traditional portfolio sales, secondary directs, stapled secondary offerings and fund restructurings.

Matt works with a variety of investment managers, from large and diversified asset managers to emerging managers developing a track record and fundraising on a deal-by-deal basis. He has closed private equity, growth equity, venture capital, credit, special situations, infrastructure and secondary funds ranging in size from $250 million to approximately $8 billion.

In addition, Matt has been named a “Rising Star” in Business and Corporate Law by Massachusetts Super Lawyers from 2016–2021 and was selected to the Best Lawyers: Ones to Watch list by Best Lawyers® for 2021 and 2022.
