Chambers' comments:

Banking & Finance: High-End Acquisition Finance
UK Ranking: 4

The Firm: This firm is “doing more and more” both in the domestic acquisition finance market and on European deals as it consolidates its position in the London market. Following the recent lateral hires of Stephen Gillespie from Allen & Overy and two private equity partners from Linklaters, the firm is said to be “doing better than ever” in its representation of sponsors. As the firm profits from Gillespie’s broad banking background at A&O in addition to some new client wins, sources declared: “Any team would benefit from having Stephen on board.” The firm is characterised by an “aggressive” negotiation style and is known for being “well connected” with key clients in the private equity industry, notably Madison Dearborn Partners and Bain Capital. These close ties to the US market lead to a steady deal flow for the finance group: “If one of the firm’s regular sponsor clients is involved in a transaction on either side of the pond, you know K&E will be handling the finance on the deal.”

The Lawyers: “Fine fellow” Stephen Gillespie offers extensive experience in acquisition finance as a former senior partner at Allen & Overy. He is rated as a “user-friendly” individual who demonstrates flexibility in transactions. “Commercially focused,” John Markland is recommended for his leveraged finance work across Europe, while Neel Sachdev impressed sources with his business acumen and client-facing skills.

Clients/Work Highlights: Recent client wins include The Blackstone Group; Industri Kapital; Moor Park Capital; Permira and Silver Point Capital Europe. The team also advised R20 on opco/propco facilities in relation to the acquisition of a pub estate from Enterprises Inns, and represented Bridgepoint Capital in its acquisition of Rodenstock from Permira Advisers.
