Kirkland & Ellis International LLP is pleased to announce that James L. Learner will rejoin the Firm as a partner in its Corporate Practice Group in the London office, effective 1 February 2015.
“Jim was instrumental to helping our London office grow from 14 lawyers to more than 115 lawyers during his 12 years there, and in institutionalizing many of our important client relationships,” said Jeffrey C. Hammes, Chairman of Kirkland’s Global Management Executive Committee. “We are thrilled to welcome our friend and colleague back to the Firm.”
Mr. Learner has extensive experience advising clients on complex transactions, principally representing private equity firms in their leveraged buyout and growth capital investing and in their fund formation activities. He returns to Kirkland after two years with Palo Alto, Calif.-based private equity firm HGGC, where he was a managing partner and member of the executive committee.
Prior to joining HGGC, Mr. Learner spent 25 years at Kirkland, where he worked with many of the Firm’s longstanding private equity clients. He started in Kirkland’s Chicago office and relocated to the London office in 2000. While in London, he led the Firm’s European operations and served as a member of the Global Management Executive Committee.
“I am grateful for the opportunity and the experience I had working with the talented group at HGGC, and I look forward to continuing to advise HGGC on their transactions. My family and I are excited to return to London, and I am thrilled to be able to provide advice and counsel once again to Kirkland’s outstanding clients,” said Mr. Learner. “I look forward to working with the exceptionally talented lawyers at Kirkland, and to bringing a new perspective on the private equity business to bear for the many sophisticated clients that turn to the Firm for advice.”
Mr. Learner has been recognized as a leading private equity lawyer in a number of legal directories, including Chambers UK and The Legal 500.
Mr. Learner, 52, earned a law degree from Harvard Law School and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan.
