Kirkland & Ellis LLP is pleased to announce that Joshua Cohen has joined the Firm’s Chicago office as a partner in the Investment Funds Group. Mr. Cohen was most recently managing director and general counsel of Highbridge Capital Management, LLC and the global head of alternatives legal for JPMorgan Asset and Wealth Management.

Mr. Cohen has extensive experience in the formation, structuring and maintenance of open and closed-end private funds, including, hedge funds, private equity and credit funds, hybrid funds, fund of funds vehicles, liquid alternative mutual funds and scalable platforms for fund sponsors. In addition, Mr. Cohen has significant experience and has provided regulatory counseling under the Investment Advisers Act, the Securities Act, the Investment Company Act, the Commodities Exchange Act, the Bank Holding Company Act, the Dodd-Frank Act and applicable agency rules.
In his role at JPMorgan Asset Management and Highbridge, Mr. Cohen managed the legal affairs of the $120 billion alternatives platform, a platform which spans across a broad range of alternative investment strategies and asset classes, including publicly traded equity and credit, private equity and credit, real estate and infrastructure in the United States, Europe and Asia. Prior to joining Highbridge in 2007, Mr. Cohen was a member of the investment management practice at Willkie Farr & Gallagher LLP, where he specialized in the legal and regulatory aspects of investment fund structuring, marketing, operations and investor communications. He earned his law degree and undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania.

Mr. Cohen’s appointment follows several recent senior hires within Kirkland’s Investment Funds Group this year. In September 2017, David King, formerly a Principal at The Carlyle Group, joined the Firm’s San Francisco office as partner; In August 2017, Anand Damodaran, formerly a partner at Ropes & Gray LLP, joined the Firm’s London office as partner; in July 2017, Alpa Patel, formerly Branch Chief of the Private Funds Branch of the investment adviser policy and rulemaking office of the SEC’s Division of Investment Management, joined the Firm’s Washington, D.C. office as partner; in June 2017, Sean Hill, formerly co-head of the private investment funds group at Proskauer Rose LLP, and Stephanie Berdik, formerly a partner at Proskauer Rose LLP, joined the Firm’s Boston office as partners; and in May 2017, Erica Williams, the former Special Assistant and Associate Counsel to President Barack Obama, and Marian Fowler, former Senior Special Counsel to the Director of the Division of Investment Management at the SEC, joined the Firm’s Washington, D.C., office as partners.
