Kirkland & Ellis LLP Expands Private Funds, Real Estate and Tax Practice Areas with Hire of Three Partners

Kirkland & Ellis LLP is pleased to announce that Bruce L. Gelman, Thomas A. Geraghty and Joshua P. Hanna have joined the Firm as partners in the Chicago office. All are former partners of Mayer Brown LLP in Chicago.

"We are delighted to welcome these talented lawyers to Kirkland," said Thomas D. Yannucci, chair of Kirkland's Worldwide Management Committee. "This team brings substantial experience in areas that will complement and enhance our existing private funds, real estate and tax practices."

"We are incredibly excited to have joined Kirkland," said Bruce Gelman. "Kirkland's leading tax practice and its extensive private equity and funds practices, as well as its exceptionally talented teams of lawyers make it the logical choice for us to continue our focus on providing sophisticated advice on investment structures in the real estate, private equity, infrastructure and related investment areas."

Mr. Gelman, 40, will concentrate his practice on the organization and structuring of real estate, infrastructure and other alternative-asset investment funds. He has significant experience representing offshore investors in the U.S. property and infrastructure markets and will maintain a broad tax planning practice representing public and private REITs and other investors in real estate and infrastructure. Mr. Gelman has been ranked as a leading lawyer by Chambers USA, America's Leading Lawyers for Business each year since 2005.

"Bruce Gelman is a familiar industry figure … noted for his effective representation of real estate investment funds and joint ventures," said Chambers in its 2007 edition. "Clients also appreciate his sound tax advice especially on complex investment structures."

Mr. Geraghty, 37, will focus his practice on domestic and international corporate tax law. He has extensive experience advising fund sponsors, investment advisors and investors who seek to identify and implement tax-efficient structures worldwide in order to enhance investor returns. Mr. Geraghty has counseled on investments for U.S. and non-U.S. investors across a broad base of asset classes, including real estate, infrastructure, and debt and equities.

Mr. Hanna, 32, will focus on representing domestic and international clients in real estate acquisitions, dispositions, joint ventures and financing, and advising clients in structuring efficient vehicles for their investments. He has experience advising public institutions, private equity funds, lenders and real estate companies in transactions involving a wide variety of property types, including office, retail, infrastructure, hospitality and multifamily.  A significant portion of Mr. Hanna's practice focuses on cross-border investments, particularly inbound U.S. investments from offshore investors.
