Kirkland & Ellis LLP Hires Former SEC Enforcement Lawyer
Kirkland & Ellis LLP is pleased to announce that Charles J. Clark has joined the Firm's Washington, D.C. office as a partner. A litigator with more than 20 years of experience, including nearly nine years at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Mr. Clark will play a key role in the Firm's white collar defense and securities enforcement practice.
"We are very pleased that Charles has joined our Firm," said Thomas D. Yannucci, chair of Kirkland's Worldwide Management Committee and partner in the Washington office. "Charles' extensive experience in the securities enforcement arena will complement our premiere litigation practice."
Mr. Clark joins the Firm from Capital One Financial Corporation, where he served as managing vice president and chief counsel of litigation from 2004. At Capital One, his responsibilities included overseeing individual and class-action consumer finance litigation, antitrust and securities litigation, commercial and contract disputes, as well as various regulatory inquiries.
Prior to joining Capital One, Charles served as Assistant Director at the SEC, Division of Enforcement. From 2001 - 2004, Charles supervised the Commission's investigation into Enron Corporation. During the Enron investigation, he supervised the work of more than 20 lawyers and accountants, coordinated the SEC's investigation with the U.S. Department of Justice Enron Task Force and various other law-enforcement and regulatory authorities, and responded to media and other public inquiries concerning Enron-related enforcement proceedings.
While at the SEC, Charles received the following awards: Chairman's Award (December 2003) (awarded to him and his team for the Enron investigation); Paul R. Carey Award (December 2002) (awarded to him personally for exceptional commitment to the Enron investigation and related subsequent enforcement proceedings); Law and Policy Award (December 2001) (awarded to the September 11th Terrorist Attack Trading Investigation Team, of which he was a part).
Charles is a graduate of the University of Virginia (1983), with high distinction, and the New York University School of Law (1988). He is a member of the District of Columbia and New York bars.
Charles served as a judicial clerk for The Honorable Julia Smith Gibbons of the U.S. District Court - Western District of Tennessee (September 1988-September 1989).
