Overview

Chad Husnick ‘is one of the best tacticians and one of the most knowledgeable scholars when it comes to the law.’ ‘He is a superstar,’ ‘really hard-working and accomplished,’ and ‘has a brilliant bankruptcy mind.’ - Chambers USA

Chad Husnick is a partner in Kirkland & Ellis’ Restructuring Practice Group. He is a restructuring dealmaker and strategic advisor who represents companies, boards, creditors, equity holders and other stakeholders in complex liability management transactions, restructurings, bankruptcies and special situations.

Chad is known for combining sophisticated restructuring and bankruptcy experience with a commercial, practical approach to solving complex business problems. He works closely with clients to develop and execute strategies designed to achieve their business objectives, whether through a negotiated out-of-court transaction, a liability management exercise, a Chapter 11 restructuring, a strategic financing or sale transaction, or contested litigation. His practice frequently requires navigating competing stakeholder interests, building consensus around complex transactions and finding creative solutions when a conventional restructuring path is unavailable.

Chad has played leading roles in some of the largest and most complex restructurings in the United States across a broad range of industries, including energy, retail, real estate, infrastructure, manufacturing, transportation and distribution, hospitality and gaming, automotive, media and technology. His representations have involved multibillion-dollar balance sheet restructurings, recapitalizations, financings, distressed M&A transactions and other strategic transactions, both in and out of court. Chad also regularly advises boards and senior management teams on corporate governance matters facing financially distressed companies, including liability management strategies, fiduciary duties and executive compensation.

Clients and peers consistently recognize both Chad’s technical capabilities and his ability to lead complex matters toward successful outcomes. Chambers USA sources describe Chad as “one of the best tacticians and one of the most knowledgeable scholars when it comes to the law,” a “superstar” with a “brilliant bankruptcy mind,” as well as “very smart, commercial and practical,” noting that “[h]e understands the push and pull in getting to a deal.” Other Chambers sources describe him as “a very prominent lawyer and a wonderful professional” and “an excellent and well respected attorney that handles highly complex debtor matters.”

The Legal 500 U.S. similarly describes Chad as “an exceptionally talented lawyer. Very clear on strategy and potential outcomes. Highly commercial” and as a “smart, innovative, and practical strategist and advisor” who “couples his near-encyclopedic knowledge of bankruptcy law with an uncanny ability to always be two steps ahead of his adversary to provide clear, concise direction to the board.”

Chad’s work has also been recognized for its transactional impact. The American Lawyer named him a “Dealmaker of the Year,” and Turnarounds & Workouts has recognized him as both an “Outstanding Restructuring Lawyer” and an “Outstanding Young Restructuring Lawyer.” He has also been recognized repeatedly by Chambers USA and The Legal 500 U.S. for his restructuring work.

Beyond his client work, Chad holds leadership positions in several of the restructuring profession’s most prominent organizations. He is a Conferee and member of the Executive Committee of the National Bankruptcy Conference, an invitation-only organization of approximately 60 judges, academics and practitioners formed during the Great Depression to assist Congress in the development of bankruptcy legislation. He is also a Fellow of the American College of Bankruptcy and serves as a Director of the American College of Bankruptcy Foundation and the Chicago Bar Foundation. Chad is a member of the International Insolvency Institute, the American Bankruptcy Institute and the Turnaround Management Association.

Chad is also a Lecturer in Law at the University of Chicago Law School and a Contributing Author to Collier on Bankruptcy, the leading treatise on U.S. bankruptcy law.
