Ian M. Betts
Overview
Ian Betts is a litigation associate in the Chicago office of Kirkland & Ellis LLP. Ian has experience litigating a wide range of intellectual property and commercial claims, including practice in a number of federal courts and in front of the United States Patent and Trademark Trial and Appeal Board.
Ian also has specific experience in the protection and enforcement of brands’ intellectual property rights in e-commerce on a global scale. He has worked with multiple Fortune 500 companies in efforts to help them protect and grow their brand equity. Ian has helped his clients obtain judgments, including attorneys’ fees against gray-market and counterfeit sellers, including on claims for violations of the Lanham Act, trademark infringement, unfair competition, false advertising and tortious interference.
Experience
Representative Matters
Prior to joining Kirkland, Ian was involved in the following matters:
- Defended global travel and hospitality advertising company in copyright dispute involving former advertising agency against a $300 million damages claim, and separately represented the same client in related state court litigation for related tort claims.
- Represented global entertainment company in copyright infringement and false advertising dispute.
- Represented manufacturer and distributor of health and wellness products in dispute against grey-market seller of goods, including claims for trademark infringement, unfair competition, deceptive trade practices and tortious interference with contractual relationship. Subsequently assisted with preparing appeal to Ninth Circuit.
- Represented manufacturer and retailer of products that provide infants’ real-time health information to parents and caregivers in dispute with U.S. Food and Drug Administration on product clearance.
