Kevin Leung
Overview
Kevin Leung is a litigation partner in the London office of Kirkland & Ellis. He is particularly experienced in litigating high-stakes shareholder, bond, investment, insolvency and restructuring disputes. He regularly advises on complex and cross-border matters, including contractual disputes, jurisdictional disputes, civil fraud, professional negligence and urgent asset preservation. Recognised as a key lawyer for dispute resolution in the 2024 edition of Legal500 Hong Kong, he has represented private equity funds, listed companies, multinational corporations, financial institutions, state-owned enterprises, professional firms and high-net-worth individuals.
Kevin is qualified in Hong Kong and England and Wales. He graduated with First Class Honours from Queens’ College, The University of Cambridge (LL.M., 2020) and First Class Honours from The University of Hong Kong (LL.B., 2015; BBA (Law), 2013).

Representative Matters
Since joining Kirkland & Ellis, Kevin has advised on the following matters:
- Acting for the ad hoc group of noteholders on the successful restructuring of over USD 16 billion offshore liabilities of Kaisa Group Holdings Ltd. (HKEx: 1638). This is one of Asia’s most significant and largest restructurings of Chinese property developers in the current sector-wide crisis, one of the largest schemes of arrangement by value ever sanctioned by the Hong Kong Court to date and the second successful restructuring of Kaisa following the first in 2016 which Kirkland also acted for the noteholders. This transaction was named “Restructuring and Insolvency Matter of the Year” by the Asia Legal Awards 2025
- Acting for the ad-hoc committee of bondholders to pursue a US$1.4 billion claim against a Chinese SOE for breach of keepwell deeds in the Hong Kong Court
- Acting for a private equity firm in HKIAC arbitration and Mainland asset preservation proceedings in connection with a US$150 million share redemption dispute
- Acting for a Big 4 accounting firm to defend a US$150 million professional negligence claim in the Hong Kong Court
- Acting for a Big 4 accounting firm to defend a US$800 million professional negligence claim in the Hong Kong Court
- Acting for the minority shareholder in unfair prejudice petition against a HKSE and SZSE dually listed Chinese property developer in the Hong Kong Court
- Acting for a US financial institution in obtaining freezing and proprietary injunction, third party gagging and disclosure, asset-tracing and “second-layer” injunction orders in Hong Kong
- Acting for a major regional US bank in obtaining freezing and proprietary injunction, and parallel third party gagging and disclosure orders in Hong Kong
- Acting for the ad-hoc committee of bondholders of China Evergrande Group (HKSE: 3333). This transaction was named “Deals of the Year 2022” by China Business Law Journal
- Acting for the ad-hoc committee of noteholders of XJ International Holdings Co Ltd (HKSE: 1765) in winding-up proceedings before the Hong Kong Court of First Instance and Court of Appeal
- Acting for the ad-hoc committee of noteholders in a successful restructuring of the New York-law governed US$275 million senior notes issued by Hong Seng Limited and guaranteed by Hong Yang Group Company Limited, the controlling shareholder of Hong Kong-listed companies Redsun Properties Group Limited (HKSE: 1996) and Redsun Services Group Limited (HKSE: 1971)
- Advising certain affiliates of Bain Capital on the US$3.16 billion take-private of Chindata Group Holdings Limited (Nasdaq: CD), a leading carrier-neutral hyperscale data center solution provider in Asia-Pacific emerging markets. This transaction was named “Best Private Equity Deal - China Offshore” by FinanceAsia Achievement Awards 2023, “Deals of the Year 2023” by China Business Law Journal and “Private Equity Deal of the Year” by IFLR Asia-Pacific Awards 2024
- Acting for the ad-hoc committee of bondholders of Kaisa Group Holdings Limited (HKSE: 1638)
- Advising the ad-hoc committee of bondholders of Modern Land (China) Co., Limited (HKSE: 1107). This transaction was named “Deals of the Year 2022” by China Business Law Journal
- Acting for the ad-hoc committee of bondholders of Fantasia Holdings Group Co., Limited (HKSE: 1777)
- Acting for a HKSE-listed brand management group on debt restructuring and related insolvency proceedings, including appointment of Bermuda provisional liquidator and Singapore winding-up proceedings
- Advising an investment fund on contentious exercise of redemption rights against a Chinese tech company
- Advising an investment fund on claims for misappropriation of funds in onshore subsidiaries of a cold storage and logistics joint venture
- Acting for the regulator in support of the successful winding-up of a major local motor insurer in the Hong Kong Court
- Acting for a private equity firm to pursue winding-up against a major Chinese e-commerce company in the Hong Kong Court
- Acting for a bondholder in the successful winding-up of a HKSE-listed Chinese property developer in the Hong Kong Court
- Acting for a US financial institution in successful freezing and proprietary injunction and enforcement proceedings in Hong Kong
- Acting for a private equity firm in Hong Kong enforcement proceedings against the personal guarantor, and advising on multijurisdictional asset investigation and enforcement strategy
- Advising bondholder on litigation and enforcement strategy following borrower defaults
- Advising a private equity firm on onshore and offshore funding dispute and exercise of call option in a real estate joint venture
- Advising a crypto company on debt restructuring including obtaining moratorium and sealing orders in the Singapore Court
- Advising a Nasdaq-listed crypto financial services company on debt restructuring, Hong Kong voluntary liquidation and Singapore judicial management application
Prior to joining Kirkland & Ellis, Kevin’s representative matters have included:
- Represented a Chinese state-owned enterprise to defend an economic tort claim and challenge jurisdiction of the Hong Kong Court in connection with strategic infrastructure projects related disputes in East Africa - the first “Belt and Road” litigation in Hong Kong
- Represented the “light touch” provisional liquidators of a HKSE-listed paper trading and manufacturing company appointed in Bermuda in a successful recognition in the Hong Kong Court
- Represented a high-net-worth beneficiary of a vast and complex estate in a high-profile dispute over appointment of professional administrators
- Represented a HKSE-listed healthcare group in Hong Kong enforcement proceedings against the personal guarantor, appointment of BVI receivers and enforcement strategy
- Represented a HKSE-listed healthcare group in Hong Kong and PRC enforcement proceedings following promissory note default
- Represented the employer in a construction arbitration to defend a substantial claim brought by the main contractor
- Advised a private bank in an investigation of a customer’s mis-selling complaint to the Hong Kong Monetary Authority
- Advised a multinational corporation in the regulator’s investigation on anti-money laundering matters
