Ryan Maister
Overview
Ryan Maister is an IP litigation associate in the Los Angeles office of Kirkland & Ellis LLP. Ryan concentrates his practice on patent and trade secret litigation. Ryan has worked on a variety of complex matters involving diverse technologies, including medical devices, semiconductors and fleet telematics software. On the plaintiff-side, Ryan was part of a team in July of 2024 who secured a multi-million dollar jury verdict for a fleet telematics provider in a multi-patent case brought in San Diego, California. On the defense side, Ryan was part of the team who secured a complete defense jury verdict for Samsung in February of 2024 in a multi-patent case brought in Waco, Texas alleging $4 billion in damages, which would have been the largest patent verdict in U.S. history.
Ryan has experience with various stages of litigation, including pre-litigation evaluation, fact discovery, expert discovery, motion practice, trial and post-trial briefing. His experience includes motion drafting, preparing witnesses for depositions, trial preparation and expert witness preparation, including for expert reports, depositions and trial. Ryan is also active in pro bono matters.

Representative Matters
Represented Samsung in defense of a multi-patent case brought by Demaray LLC on what it alleged to be foundational patents in the semiconductor manufacturing industry. Demaray targeted Samsung’s worldwide sales of computer chips, seeking $4 billion in damages. After a trial in the Western District of Texas, Waco Division, the jury rendered a complete victory for Samsung, finding no infringement of all asserted claims on all accused products.
Represented a leading fleet telematics provider (as the plaintiff) in a multi-patent case brought against a competitor. After trial in the Southern District of California, the jury rendered a verdict in favor of the plaintiffs, finding willful infringement and awarding a multi-million dollar judgment.
