Joshua Payne is a registered foreign lawyer in Hong Kong and a partner in Kirkland & Ellis LLP (U.S.). His practice focuses on public and private M&A across a range of industries representing private equity firms, global financial investors and major corporates in Asia.
In 2018/19, Joshua was on secondment as Legal Counsel to CVC Capital Partners’ Hong Kong office, covering the firm’s investments across Asia.
Experience
Representative Matters
Since joining Kirkland, Joshua's representative matters have included:
- Bain Capital on its approximate US$485 million acquisition of a 24.98% stake in IIFL Wealth Management (NSE: IIFLWAM), a company listed on the National Stock Exchange of India, from General Atlantic and Fairfax Financial. IIFL Wealth Management is one of the largest and fastest growing wealth and asset management firms in India
- TPG, a leading global alternative asset firm, and Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, a globally diversified investment institution that prudently invests funds on behalf of the Government of Abu Dhabi, on the acquisition of a minority stake in The CrownX
Prior to joining Kirkland, Joshua’s representative matters have included:
- Vinmec, a subsidiary of Vingroup, on the VND4.7tn (US$203.1 million) investment by a consortium led by GIC
- Princeton Digital Group, the data centre services provider, on the US$360 million investment by OTPP and Warburg Pincus
- CVC Capital Partners on its controlling minority investment in WebPros Group, the web hosting software platform
- CVC Capital Partners on the US$8.0 billion sale of the Formula One Group to Liberty Media Corporation
- Allfunds Bank, a portfolio company of Hellman & Friedman, on its acquisition of Credit Suisse InvestLab
- CPPIB on the sale of a 39% stake in Interparking, the pan-European car park owner and operator, to APG
- CPPIB on its £675 million minority investment in BGL Group, owner of Compare the Market - Advent International on the acquisition of shipping company V.Group from OMERS Private Equity
- AEA Investors on the acquisition of recruitment specialist Frontica Advantage by NES Global Talent
- A leading private equity firm on the proposed acquisition of The Medical City, the hospital network in the Philippines
- A leading private equity firm on the proposed acquisition of Mphasis, a Mumbai-listed IT outsourcing services provider
- A leading private equity firm on the proposed acquisition of Hanon Systems, a Korean-listed auto parts manufacturer
- Warburg Pincus on the partial sale of its stake in ESR, the logistics real estate platform
- A global financial investor on its co-investment alongside MBK Partners as part of its privatization of CAR Inc.
