The World's Leading Lawyers 2001-2002: Banking & Finance: Chicago

On an annual basis, Chambers & Partners conducts extensive research and thorough data analysis in compiling their objective list of recommended worldwide legal practitioners. In the regional review of leading firms in "Banking & Finance: Chicago," Kirkland & Ellis ranked fifth.  This ranking reflects the opinion of the marketplace as revealed by Chambers' systematic and objective research.

Chambers' comments:

"While not known for traditional banking work, the firm ranks as the group seen most often on 'the other side of the table' on behalf of borrowers in financial transactions. In acting for the firm's large base of international corporates and private companies, team members have acquired substantial experience of structuring and negotiating credit arrangements.

The group also has a small lender representation practice in secured senior and subordinated debt. Lending clients tend to be institutional banks and private financing groups putting together loan funds. The group is known to be particularly active in mezzanine lending in conjunction with equity investments and regularly advises Bankers Trust, Bank One and Deutsche Bank in mezzanine and bridge loan facilities.

Thanks to the firm's huge reputation in private equity, the group is called upon to undertake substantial finance work in venture capital transactions. Most notably, the group represents the venture capital arms of banks such as CSFB, Citicorp Venture Capital and other Citicorp affiliates.

Ties with foreign offices bring in solid cross-border financing transactions. Recently the group has been called upon to provide guarantees and a US securities package for transactions originating in London.

Clients: Deutsche Bank; First Union; Bank One; Bank of Scotland; HSBC, Toronto Dominion; Société Générale, GMAC.
