Chambers' comments:

Illinois Ranking: 2

The Firm: This behemoth of the Chicago legal market has a strong corporate arm that is especially busy in M&A and global finance. Accordingly, the employee benefits and executive compensation team is frequently called upon to provide support on corporate and finance transactions. The 13-strong team handles globally significant deals, and recently acted for GM on the sale of GMAC. It also provided advice on fiduciary issues connected to the formation of Madison Dearborn Capital Partners V, a $6 billion private equity fund.

The Lawyers: Vicki Hood is perhaps the preeminent transactional benefits lawyer in Chicago. Clients benefit from her experience providing employee benefits aspects of corporate deals, bankruptcies and workouts. She frequently advises funds and investment managers in relation to ERISA fiduciary rules with respect to incentive compensation, prohibited transactions and general compliance with the regulations.

Clients/Work Highlights: Aon; Hyatt; GM Pension Fund; PwC and National Hockey League Players' Association.
