Chambers' comments:

Private Equity: Buyouts
UK-wide Ranking: Tier 4

The Firm: This team, once commonplace in high-end acquisitions, has seen a shift in direction in the current market and is now active in portfolio company representation, distressed matters and the reacquisition of businesses by private equity groups. Its multi-jurisdictional capabilities remain strong, as indicated by its representation of Madison Dearborn Partners, TA Associates and Apax Partners in their EUR1.1 billion investment in Weather Investments. Kirkland's internationally renowned funds practice is the envy of many, with substantial knowledge across funds of all sizes and benefiting from a close relationship with the restructuring practice.

Key Individuals: Jim Learner led the team on the Weather Investments deal, which was entirely equity-financed and incorporated work in the emerging markets of Algeria, Egypt, Greece and North Korea. He has extensive transactional and fund formation knowledge, and is also valued for his international experience. Graham White has a commercial approach and was involved in the disposal of Somerfield to Co-op Group for £1.57 billion, which was one of Europe's top private equity deals.
