D.C.’s Rising Stars: Michael Williams

If the future of the legal profession in the nation’s capital rests with these 40 lawyers, it’s in good hands. The National Law Journal presents some of the most accomplished young attorneys in the D.C. area.

Michael Williams, 41
Partner, Kirkland & Ellis

Kirkland & Ellis partner Michael Williams said he knew in kindergarten he wanted to be a lawyer—the idea of arguing for a living was appealing. It turned out to be his strength. Williams, who clerked in the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit and later for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy, has established a successful track record before juries and appellate judges. “I’m happy to get into trials and in front of juries,” he said. “It’s my favorite thing to do as a lawyer.” He is national counsel to BASF Corp., coordinating the chemical company’s tort claims defense. Williams also is co-coordinator of Kirkland’s local pro bono efforts.
