Washington, D.C. Crisis Management and Government Oversight Winner: Kirkland & Ellis
The National Law Journal named Kirkland the "Crisis Management and Government Oversight Firm of the Year" at the D.C. Legal Awards. Mark Filip participated in this Q&A.
What was the biggest challenge you faced in the past year and how did you adjust to it?
The evolving enforcement environment, at both state and federal levels, presented both challenges and uncertainty for clients confronting investigations, regulatory scrutiny, and other crisis events. Kirkland responded by drawing on our extensive government experience to provide practical, business-focused guidance, which has led to increased demand in the market.
What is a significant case you have handled in the past year and how did it stand out?
Kirkland advised Credit Suisse and UBS in cross-border tax investigations, securing a plea agreement and non-prosecution agreement that resolved the DOJ’s investigation into conduct in Switzerland and Singapore. The resolutions included an unprecedented immunity provision allowing UBS to disclose previously unidentified U.S. tax-related criminal activity discovered during its integration of Credit Suisse.
What makes your firm stand out in this practice area?
Kirkland is distinguished by its deep bench of former senior government officials and its integrated global platform. With more than 70 lawyers who served in leadership roles across the DOJ, SEC, FTC, the White House and Congress, spanning administrations and party lines, we provide practical, current and highly credible guidance when clients face their most complex and sensitive challenges.
