Kirkland & Ellis LLP Tax Partner Lands Prominent Role with New York State Bar Association
Kirkland & Ellis LLP is pleased to announce that New York tax partner Patrick C. Gallagher has been appointed to the executive officer position of Secretary for the Tax Section of the New York State Bar Association (NYSBA). This appointment commences a four-year commitment leading to Gallagher’s advancement to Chair of the Tax Section in 2007. The announcement was made official at the NYSBA’s annual meeting this week in New York City.
The NYSBA is the nation's largest voluntary statewide association of lawyers. The Tax Section alone has 2,700 members, including most of the leading tax lawyers in New York City.
The Tax Section is highly influential in shaping tax law in the United States. Working cooperatively with the Treasury Department, the Internal Revenue Service, and the New York taxing authorities, the Tax Section’s primary goal is to improve the law by providing impartial commentary on proposed tax legislation and regulations.
Gallagher has been on the Tax Section’s Executive Committee since 1993. He has also co-chaired from time to time several other Tax Section committees, including the committees on corporations, reorganizations, and partnerships.
“Being asked to help lead this pre-eminent professional organization is a great honor,” Gallagher said. “I look forward to working with our deeply talented membership to continue the Tax Section’s long tradition of outstanding public service.”
Gallagher, 50, joined Kirkland in 1985 after graduating from Harvard Law School. He became a partner in 1991. His diverse practice at Kirkland concerns tax aspects of complex business transactions, including mergers and acquisitions, forming investment partnerships, and workouts and bankruptcy restructurings. Mr. Gallagher was recently named one of the leading tax lawyers by THE International Who's Who of Business Lawyers (2003).
Gallagher’s Tax Section appointment highlights the increasing influence and visibility of Kirkland’s New York office, which opened with 12 attorneys in 1990 and has grown to more than 200 lawyers today.
