Inauguration of Drinking Water Supply Project on Fifth Anniversary of 2005 Pakistan Earthquake

MUNICH, 20 October 2010 -- Dr. Martin Ströhmann, partner in the Munich office of Kirkland & Ellis International LLP, inaugurated the new drinking water supply scheme in Koklian Khan Kalan, one of eight North Pakistani villages that the Firm supports in reconstruction projects together with the Omar Asghar Khan Development Foundation. Donation checks were also presented in three other villages, and another one to two projects are planned. The eighth drinking water supply scheme was inaugurated on the fifth anniversary of the devastating earthquake in Pakistan.

To date, only 30-40 percent of the infrastructure that existed in the area before the earthquake has been redeveloped. And, the situation in the distressed area has worsened due to recent monsoon rain. Women from many villages still march for several hours to fetch drinking water in cans or other containers. The reconstruction projects assist the villages, with financial aid and construction expertise, in self-organizing the construction of drinking water supply schemes.

These projects are enabled by donations from the service club Round Table Germany, the Munich office of Kirkland & Ellis, and funds from the Kirkland & Ellis Foundation. The project has to date provided drinking water to more than 20,000 people, at the cost of approximately €3 per person. Dr. Martin Ströhmann has travelled several times to the Pakistani region since 2005 to co-ordinate the projects together with the Omar Asghar Khan Development Foundation, and to monitor the use of funds.
