Award Who's Who Legal

Leading Law Firms for Pro Bono

For the third year in a row, Who’s Who Legal named Kirkland & Ellis one of 10 Leading Law Firms for Pro Bono. The list includes firms that are paving the way in terms of their approach to pro bono, achieved senior buy-in across their organization, generated significant change and selected projects that leverage the skills of the lawyers at the firm.

Who’s Who Legal noted Kirkland’s work on two LGBT victories in 2014 – one of which saw the Firm work with Lambda Legal to represent couples arguing that Indiana’s same-sex marriage ban was unconstitutional. A district court granted summary judgment, and on September 4, 2014, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit affirmed the decision. After the United States Supreme Court denied Indiana’s petition for writ of certiorari, couples began marrying in October 2014. In 2014, Kirkland contributed more than 117,000 hours to pro bono matters, with more than 70 percent of partners, associates and trainees engaging in pro bono work.
