On an annual basis, Chambers Global conducts extensive research and thorough data analysis in compiling their objective list of legal talent available at the highest level of international legal practice. Their research methodology has been independently audited and confirmed to be thorough, robust and complete.

In Chambers' 2002-2003 regional review of international legal talent in the area of "Insolvency/Corporate Recovery: Chicago," Kirkland & Ellis ranked first. This ranking reflects the opinion of the marketplace as revealed by Chambers' systematic and objective research.

Kirkland partner James H.M. Sprayregen was selected as a leading individual in this area.

Chambers' comments:
An outstanding and high-profile debtor practice, it is unanimously acclaimed as one of the leaders in Chicago. Peers believe that the firm has developed a "nationally dominant debtor practice," advising a number of blue-chip clients. Major matters recently undertaken include representing Trans World Airlines in all aspects of its Chapter 11 case, and WR Grace on its Chapter 11 reorganisation to effect a final resolution of its asbestos liability.

Head of the practice James Sprayregen was felt by interviewees to deserve the reputation he has developed as "a very fine bankruptcy lawyer." Described to researchers as a "charismatic deal maker," his strongest suit is said by peers to be his ability "to get people around a table." An "honest and straightforward" attorney, his recent highlights include representing the United Artists Theatre Company in connection with its pre-arranged bankruptcy plan of reorganisation and advising the American Skiing Company on all aspects of its corporate restructuring.

Clients: Zenith Electronics; Teligent; Greenwich Capital; TWA; WR Grace; United Artists Theatre Company.
