Kirkland opened its London office in 1994 to enhance the Firm’s service to existing and prospective clients in Europe. The office was established with two partners who relocated to London from Kirkland's U.S. offices. Today, our London office consists of approximately 200 lawyers practicing English, U.S. and international law. Chambers & Partners UK and The Legal 500 United Kingdom rank Kirkland’s London private equity, finance, private funds, restructuring, international arbitration and litigation among the best in the country.

Our London corporate lawyers handle a broad range of corporate matters and are particularly active in private equity, representing financial sponsors and private equity investors in some of the largest leveraged buyouts in Europe. We form private equity funds and are active in international capital markets and securities regulation. Kirkland’s tax lawyers cover tax planning in connection with mergers, acquisitions, buyouts, fund formation, restructurings, financing, executive compensation plans, other sophisticated transactions, and contested tax matters.

Kirkland’s London finance group has long been recognised as a leader in acquisition finance, and our approach is heavily business-oriented. Kirkland also has unsurpassed experience and depth in structuring and negotiating various layers of senior and subordinated debt and equity financing in connection with leveraged acquisitions.

The Firm’s London restructuring group is one of the most active restructuring groups in Europe. The Firm is involved in most leading engagements, usually creating the ground-breaking aspect of a restructuring. Whereas most restructuring practices represent companies and all manner of creditors (banks, hedge funds, distressed investors), Kirkland predominantly represents companies and their boards of directors, focusing on creative, out-of-court solutions to capital structure concerns and complexities.

The Firm’s European capital markets and high-yield practice represents issuers, sponsors and underwriters in a wide variety of international securities transactions, with particular focus on offerings of high-yield and other complex debt securities.

Kirkland advises on all aspects of EU and UK competition law, including merger control, market dominance, cartel investigations, sector inquiries and private enforcement. We represent clients across a range of industries, including financial services, media and communications, energy, and transport.

The London litigation practice represents multinational corporations, governments and government-owned entities in international arbitration and litigation cases worldwide. Kirkland’s lawyers are recognised for their experience in fraud matters and in white-collar crime investigations on a global basis.

Kirkland represents some of the world’s leading technology companies, bringing our expertise to all areas of IP, including patent litigation, trade mark matters, outsourcing, computer software, licensing, distribution, joint venture agreements, biotechnology, data protection and e-commerce issues, as well as competition law-related matters.
