Largest Bankruptcy Filings of 2017

In its annual report on the bankruptcy industry, Turnarounds & Workouts recognized Kirkland & Ellis as counsel in 10 of the largest 32 bankruptcy filings of 2017 -- including three of the five largest filings: Seadrill Limited, Toys R Us, Inc., Avaya Inc., GenOn Energy, Inc., Cobalt International Energy, Inc., 21st Century Oncology Holdings, Inc., Rue21, Inc., Gymboree Corporation, Payless Holdings LLC and Global A&T Electronics Ltd.

Seadrill Limited
Counsel included Kirkland litigation partner Anna Rotman and restructuring partner Brian Schartz. Seadrill filed for bankruptcy in September 2017 with $21.6 billion in assets -- the largest bankruptcy filing of 2017.

Toys R Us, Inc.
Counsel included Kirkland restructuring partners Edward Sassower and Josh Sussberg. Toys R Us filed for bankruptcy in September 2017 with $6.9 billion in assets -- the third-largest bankruptcy filing of 2017.

Avaya Inc.
Counsel included Kirkland restructuring partners James Sprayregen and Jonathan Henes. Avaya filed for bankruptcy in January 2017 with $5.5 billion in assets -- the fourth-largest bankruptcy filing of 2017.

GenOn Energy, Inc.
Counsel included Kirkland restructuring partners James Sprayregen and David Seligman. GenOn Energy filed for bankruptcy in June 2017 with $2.4 billion in assets.

Cobalt International Energy, Inc.
Counsel included Kirkland restructuring partners James Sprayregen and Marc Kieselstein. Cobalt International Energy filed for bankruptcy in December 2017 with $1.6 billion in assets.

21st Century Oncology Holdings, Inc.
Counsel included Kirkland restructuring partner Christopher Marcus. 21st Century Oncology Holdings filed for bankruptcy in May 2017 with $1.0 billion in assets.

Rue21, Inc.
Counsel included Kirkland restructuring partners Jonathan Henes and Nicole Greenblatt. Rue21 filed for bankruptcy in May 2017 with $950 million in assets.

Gymboree Corporation
Counsel included Kirkland restructuring partners James Sprayregen and Anup Sathy. Gymboree Corporation filed for bankruptcy in June 2017 with $755 million in assets.

Payless Holdings LLC
Counsel included Kirkland restructuring partners Nicole Greenblatt and Cristine Pirro. Payless Holdings filed for bankruptcy in April 2017 with $500 million to $1 billion in assets.

Global A&T Electronics Ltd.
Counsel included Kirkland restructuring partners Marc Kieselstein and Patrick Nash. Global A&T Electronics filed for bankruptcy in December 2017 with $500 million to $1 billion in assets.
