Kirkland's Washington, D.C. office opened its doors in 1930 and has celebrated more than 85 years of excellence in the nation's capital, growing to approximately 200 attorneys. A commitment to superior service has been the hallmark of Kirkland's practice groups, a fact recognized not only by our clients but also by the federal government, which in recent years has hired a number of Kirkland-trained lawyers for senior government positions.

Kirkland's Washington office houses some of the most talented lawyers in the city, who serve clients in the Firm's areas of core strength: commercial, antitrust, appellate, defamation and white collar litigation, intellectual property, corporate, environmental and regulatory matters.

The Washington office has a large number of seasoned trial lawyers who have tried significant cases to verdict in federal and state courts and before arbitration panels all over the United States. The office handles litigation in virtually every substantive area, including securities, accounting, antitrust, merger and acquisition disputes, ERISA, insurance coverage, contract, fraud, RICO, shareholder derivative claims, First Amendment and defamation, environmental, product liability, and class actions. The Firm's white collar practice routinely handles internal investigations for corporate boards and defends clients in government investigations and civil and criminal prosecutions brought by the Department of Justice, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and state attorneys general. Finally, the Washington office is also home to the Firm's appellate practice, which is staffed with Supreme Court and appellate clerks with experience in the Supreme Court and state and appellate courts throughout the United States.

Intellectual Property

The Washington office has a team of intellectual property lawyers who focus exclusively on bringing and defending patent, trademark and copyright claims, trade secrets cases, and other cases with significant technical issues. Many of these lawyers have technical degrees and have experience either in the United States Patent and Trademark Office or in the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Similar to all of Kirkland's litigators, these lawyers are trial-ready and have achieved trial victories in intellectual property cases across a variety of scientific and technical disciplines.

Kirkland's Firmwide Antitrust & Competition practice has a strong presence in Washington D.C., where both the Federal Trade Commission and the Department of Justice are located. This group of attorneys has litigated a wide variety of high-profile antitrust cases to verdict and on appeal, both against the government and private plaintiffs, and has also represented clients in connection with regulatory review of mergers and acquisitions and other government criminal price fixing and civil antitrust investigations.

Kirkland's Washington office has a diversified corporate practice group with experience in a broad range of corporate, M&A, corporate finance, private equity, securities, and tax matters. Clients include large and small public companies, private businesses, private equity and venture capital firms, investment banks, individual corporate officers and directors, and entrepreneurs. The Washington office also has a team of experienced environmental lawyers who handle the full range of environmental compliance and liability issues as they arise in corporate and real estate transactions across all offices in the Firm.

International Trade and National Security

Anchored in Washington, D.C., the Firm's International Trade and National Security Practice, in coordination with the Kirkland’s global offices and related practice areas, works closely with companies, investors and boards to mitigate and manage the legal and non-market risks associated with operating or investing across national borders. The International Trade and National Security Practice team is comprised of former senior U.S. and U.K. government officials with deep experience in cross-border investment clearance (CFIUS), economic sanctions (OFAC, EU), export controls (ITAR, EAR), anti-corruption and related areas.

Government, Regulatory and Internal Investigations Practice

With its advantageous location in the U.S. capital, the Washington office has developed a number of other practice areas that focus on regulatory and governmental issues.

The Firm regularly represents corporations and their executives in matters involving FCPA, securities, health care, environmental, tax, public corruption, antitrust and related areas, in addition to having conducted hundreds of comprehensive internal investigations.

Kirkland attorneys have represented clients before nearly every federal and state agency, including the DOJ, the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Food and Drug Administration, the National Association of Securities Dealers, and before numerous administrative agencies, including judicial and congressional review committees, and international governing agencies, including the European Union.

Efficient Delivery of Services

As an integrated part of a firm with approximately 2,200 lawyers, Kirkland's Washington office can commit the full resources of a international firm to any matter, as appropriate. The Washington office reflects the strengths present throughout the Firm to handle legally and technically complex transactions and disputes with dispatch and efficiency. The growth of the Washington office has been based upon delivering legal services of the highest quality in a cost-effective manner through lean staffing, appropriate delegation to talented junior lawyers, and close client relationships.
