Overview

Alex Barata is a partner in Kirkland’s Technology and IP Transactions Practice Group, based in the Bay Area. Alex has substantial experience advising clients in structuring and negotiating complex transactions where technology, intellectual property and data protection play a key role. His work includes private and public-sector M&A deals, carve-outs, IP and data licensing arrangements, technology transfers, joint ventures, strategic alliances, debt financing, fund regulatory matters and restructurings. Alex’s advisory experience spans a range of industries, including software, healthcare and life sciences, media and entertainment, education, advertising and e-commerce.

Alex has a particular focus on software and privacy-related matters and is a trusted advisor to clients in navigating the evolving landscape of privacy compliance, data protection, and the proliferation of artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies. He is skilled at working with clients to develop corporate governance frameworks and strategies that effectively harness technology to meet business objectives.

Outside of his practice at Kirkland, Alex serves on the Board of Directors of AIDS Legal Referral Panel, a nonprofit organization that provides pro-bono legal services to individuals living with HIV and AIDS.
