Overview
Megan McGlynn Butler is a litigation partner in Kirkland’s Washington, D.C., office with a focus on complex litigation at the trial and appellate levels. Megan’s litigation experience spans antitrust, commercial contract, fraud, false-advertising and administrative law. She has helped obtain successful outcomes for her clients at all stages of litigation, and several of her cases have been profiled by The American Lawyer as part of its “Litigator of the Week” contest. Before joining Kirkland, Megan clerked for Justice Brett M. Kavanaugh of the U.S. Supreme Court, Chief Judge William H. Pryor Jr. of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit and Judge Dabney L. Friedrich of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

Representative Matters
SpareBox Self Storage in a Texas state court dispute that threatened more than $60 million in damages after a $300-plus million real estate transaction did not close. Helped successfully defend SpareBox against claims for breach of contract and fraudulent inducement. Kirkland won dismissal of the contract claims and secured summary judgment on the remaining claims, ending the case on the eve of trial. Pending appeal.
Abbott Laboratories in a costs appeal from a $30-plus million race discrimination/retaliation lawsuit. After a two-week trial, the jury unanimously found for Abbott on all eight of plaintiff’s claims. Led the appeal of Abbott’s costs award and secured a unanimous Seventh Circuit affirmance without argument.
Ranbaxy in multidistrict putative class action litigation arising out of a patent-litigation settlement concerning the cholesterol drug Lipitor®. Helped secure a complete victory on summary judgment before the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey.
Tenaris Coiled Tubes LLC and its affiliate, Tenaris S.A., in a patent and antitrust dispute against a rival manufacturer of quench-and-tempered coiled tubing, an important product used in oil exploration. Tenaris asserted patent-infringement claims, and the plaintiff responded by asserting an antitrust claim against Tenaris. Helped Tenaris secure a summary-judgment victory on the antitrust claim, eliminating Tenaris’ liability for treble damages under the Sherman Act. Pending appeal.
A Dallas real estate developer in the appeal of his federal conviction for the alleged bribery of public officials. Helped secure the client’s release on bail pending appeal and vacatur of the conviction. The Kirkland team also defeated rehearing en banc.
