Chambers' comments:

New York
Ranking: 2

The Firm: The deep client base of this firm has helped create a brand image within the private equity market which is second to none. Attorneys are commended by clients for their "good feel for the mood of the market" and take a "thorough but always results focused" approach to transactions. Private equity is a stand-alone practice at the New York office, but the firm can draw on its international network, including such luminaries in the Chicago office as Bill Kirsch and Kevin Evanich, who are cited by clients as central to operations. The team handles buyouts, investments and fund formation in a seamless approach to operations.

The Lawyers: The firm scored a major coup in its recent recruitment of heavy hitter Steve Fraidin from Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson. He brings key clients such as Forstmann Little to the firm, and is expected to focus on the development of the New York team. In this task he is ably assisted by Kirk Radke, who clients endorse for his skills as both a dealmaker and a fund structuring specialist.

The Clients: The firm's cross-border capability was exemplified by its advice on the E3.5 billion sale of common shares of AEGON USA. Other clients include: Bain Capital; Citigroup Venture Capital; Merrill Lynch Private Equity Group; Catterton Partners; Vestar Capital Partners;
Forstmann Little & Co; Centennial Ventures and SUN Capital Partners.
