Overview
Jules Cantor is a partner in the Chicago office of Kirkland & Ellis LLP who focuses his practice on complex litigation. He has substantial experience with securities and shareholder litigation, M&A litigation, corporate and government investigation matters, class actions and other commercial disputes. Jules also has an active and expanding sports litigation practice and has represented sports franchises and their ownership in connection with multiple high-profile matters.
Experience
Representative Matters
Since joining Kirkland, Jules has been involved in the following matters:
Securities, Shareholder and M&A Litigation
- Representing Abbott Laboratories and/or certain directors and officers in various shareholder matters, including a putative securities class action and shareholder derivative litigation;
- Representing Boeing in securities litigation relating to the 737 MAX;
- Representing EQT Corporation and certain current and former officers and directors in a securities class action, related individual securities fraud lawsuits and shareholder derivative actions, arising out of EQT’s $6.7 billion acquisition of Rice Energy;
- Representing Everbridge, Inc. and certain of its former officers and directors in securities litigation concerning alleged misstatements regarding Everbridge’s acquisition and integration of other companies;
- Representing Hub Group, Inc. and certain of its directors and officers in a putative securities class action and shareholder derivative litigation;
- Represented founder and former CEO of publicly traded biotechnology company in putative securities class action and shareholder derivative litigation.
Sports Litigation
- Representing Chicago Cubs in misappropriation, infringement, and false advertising case brought against owner of a rooftop across from Wrigley Field.
Class Actions
- Represented Home Partners of America, defending several class actions in state and federal courts around the country in which plaintiffs allege consumer fraud and similar claims arising from HPA’s rent-to-own contracts with tenants/purchasers.
Prior to joining Kirkland, Jules was involved in the following matters:
- Represented private equity firm and certain director designees in a post-closing shareholder challenge to approximately $4 billion acquisition by funds affiliated with the firm and another third party;
- Represented a board committee of a major technology company in its investigation of a shareholder litigation demand asserting claims of personal misconduct by a senior leader and of mishandling of whistleblower reports relating to the alleged misconduct;
- Represented packaged bakery foods company and certain directors and officers in putative securities class action;
- Represented energy company and certain directors and officers in securities class action;
- Represented directors of publicly traded company in shareholder derivative litigation challenging share buyback transaction with then-controlling stockholder;
- Represented multinational Fortune 500 company in SEC and DOJ investigations regarding accounting issues;
- Represented broker-dealer in several FINRA arbitrations related to claims of unsuitable investment recommendations;
- Represented biotechnology company against expedited statutory claim by director seeking inspection of corporate books and records;
- Represented consumer reporting agency in dozens of lawsuits under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, including in precedent-setting matter before the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit.
