Chambers' comments:
Private Equity: International Buyouts
UK-wide Ranking: Tier 3
This firm has made a significant impact in the international private equity market, particularly for its work on larger transatlantic deals. Its representation of US client Bain Capital on its £1.4 billion acquisition of UK-based Brakes Group was a major highlight on this front. The lead partner in this deal was practice head James Learner, who is active in all of the London office's key transactions, commentators say. However, the London team is still reeling from the departure of partner Raymond McKeeve, who was part of a group from Linklaters that moved to Kirkland & Ellis' London office to beef up its UK private equity offering. The jury is still out on how this will affect this US firm's ability to develop a truly UK-focused practice. Graham White has "extensive familiarity with private equity and tremendous commerciality," according to clients. He represented CCMP Capital on its EUR685 million acquisition of BOC Edwards. White's negotiation skills are highly esteemed: "He is an aggressive negotiator but has the skill to know when to back off."
